Reception Class Curriculum Information

At Amblecote Primary, we are proud to welcome a 45 children into our Reception year. We are committed to recognising and nurturing every child as an individual, ensuring that every pupil receives the strongest possible start to their learning journey. Central to our approach is creating an environment where children feel safe, secure, and a genuine sense of belonging from their very first day.

To provide high‑quality learning experiences and personalised support, we organise our Reception cohort into two smaller classes of 23 and 22 children. Each class benefits from its own full‑time class teacher and a highly experienced full‑time EYFS Teaching Assistant, allowing us to know each child well and respond effectively to their individual needs. Through warm relationships, thoughtful provision, and a strong focus on early development, we strive to ensure that every child is confident, happy, and ready to thrive as part of our school community.

Reception Yearly Curriculum Overview

The Reception curriculum is structured to ensure a coherent and progressive development of skills in line with the statutory aims of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). It provides a carefully sequenced pathway that enables all children to secure the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for successful transition into the Year 1 National Curriculum. Learning is planned to build cumulatively across the year, ensuring children revisit, consolidate, and deepen key concepts through a balance of direct teaching, guided practice, and purposeful play.

The curriculum promotes strong foundations in communication and language, personal, social and emotional development, early literacy, and mathematical understanding, recognising these as essential for future learning. Provision is underpinned by high quality interactions, enabling environments, and well designed routines that support the development of self-regulation, independence, and positive learning behaviours.

The curriculum is ambitious, inclusive, and designed to ensure that all children, including those who may be disadvantaged or have additional needs, are supported to know more, remember more, and do more over time. Through systematic progression and intentional planning, the reception year establishes the secure foundations necessary for children to access the demands of the National Curriculum with confidence and readiness.

Early Years Foundation Stage Aims:

  1. All children deserve the care and support they need to have the best start in life.

Children learn and develop at a faster rate from birth to five years old than at any other time in their lives, so their experiences in early years have a major impact on their future life chances. A secure, safe, and happy childhood is important in its own right. Good parenting and high-quality early learning provide the foundation children need to fulfil their potential.

  1. The EYFS sets the standards that all early years providers must meet to ensure that children learn and develop well and are kept healthy and safe. It promotes teaching and learning to ensure children’s ‘school readiness’ and gives children the right foundation for good future progress through school and life.

  1. The EYFS is about what children learn, as well as how they learn.

Effective practice is a mix of different approaches. Children learn through play, by observing each other and through adult-guided learning.

The EYFS seeks to provide:

  • Quality and consistency in all early year’s settings, so that every child makes good progress, and no child gets left behind.
  • A secure foundation through planning for the learning and development of each individual child and assessing and reviewing what they have learned regularly.
  • Partnership working between practitioners and with parents and/or carers.
  • Equality of opportunity and anti-discriminatory practice, ensuring that every child is included and supported.
