PSHE & RSE Curriculum Statement

At Amblecote Primary School, personal, social and health education (PSHE) and our relationships curriculum (RSE) enable our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of a society. We feel it is an important part of children’s education and that children at all levels are helped to understand how they are developing personally, socially and emotionally. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of the diverse society in which we live. We encourage our children to play a positive role in contributing to school and the wider community. Our curriculum is inclusive and reflects the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our pupils. It promotes kindness, respect, resilience, and self-worth.

Protected Characteristics

We are aware of the way that PSHE and Relationships Education supports many of the principles of safeguarding and links closely to schools Safeguarding, SMSC and British Values. • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Marriage and civil partnership
  • Pregnancy & Maternity
  • Race
  • Religion and/or belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation

British Values

Through our PSHE/RSE curriculum at Amblecote Primary School we recognise our duty to ‘actively promote’ and provide opportunity for children to understand the fundamental British Values (Democracy, The Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect and Tolerance) first set out by the Government in the ‘Prevent’ strategy in 2014, for those with different faiths and beliefs in order for them to become fair, tolerant and confident adults in a forever challenging world.

What We Teach in PSHE & RSE at Amblecote

The curriculum is intended to provide a structure and a context for a range of learning opportunities, lessons are sequence and progressive, but flexibility is to also be encouraged.

We believe that the purpose of PSHE/RSE education is to build, where appropriate, on the statutory content already outlined in the National Curriculum, the basic school curriculum and in statutory guidance on: i.e., drug education, financial education, citizenship, personal safety (including online safety), relationship and sex education (RSE) and the importance of physical activity and diet for a healthy lifestyle. To promote resilience, resourcefulness, reasoning and achievement in an environment where children have ownership of their learning which they can independently reflect upon.

How We Teach PSHE & RSE at Amblecote

PSHE and RSE is taught through:

  • Weekly from Year 1 - Year 6, using age-appropriate resources and approaches
  • A spiral curriculum the revisits key themes and builds depth over time
  • Cross-curricular links.

We use discussion, role-play, stories, and real-life scenarios to help children explore sensitive topics in a safe and supportive environment. Our approach is underpinned by our whole-school values.

There are always occasions where teachers may feel it necessary to teach PSHE as a result of an issue arisen in their own class or in response to a local in national event, in addition, nurture intervention groups are delivered to support cohort needs, led by the school's pastoral lead.

PSHE is also an important part of whole school and class assemblies where children's spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity is stimulated, challenged and nurtured through the coverage of key events and National and Global news.
