French Curriculum Statement
At Amblecote Primary School, our French curriculum provides pupils with the opportunity to develop language skills, cultural awareness, and confidence in communication.
We teach French from Year 3 to Year 6, with a weekly lesson for every year group, ensuring continuity, progression and enjoyment.
How We Teach French at Amblecote
French is taught through:
- Weekly lessons that include speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
- Songs, games, stories, and role-play to make learning engaging and memorable.
Lessons are carefully sequenced to build on prior learning and promote long-term retention. We also provide opportunities for pupils to use French in real-life contexts and across the curriculum.
What We Teach in French at Amblecote
Our curriculum follows the Language Angels scheme of work.
Our French curriculum enables children to:
- Understand and respond to spoken and written French.
- Speak with increasing confidence, fluency, and accuracy.
- Write short texts using familiar vocabulary and grammatical structures.
- Explore the culture, traditions, and geography of the French-speaking world.
We focus on the three key areas of language learning: phonics, vocabulary, and grammar, ensuring pupils build a strong foundation for future language study.

Children develop confidence in using French for practical communication. They learn to:
- Engage in conversations and express opinions.
- Read and understand simple texts.
- Write short sentences in Key Stage 2 and adapt phrases to suit different contexts.
Assessment includes:
- Observation and participation in lessons.
- End of unit assessments.
- Pupil voice and work samples to monitor progression.
This ensures pupils are making progress and developing secure language skills, ready for transition to secondary education.
