Art Design Curriculum Statement

At Amblecote children are given the opportunity to explore their artistic and creative ideas and be inspired by other artists and the world around them. Pupils explore creativity through units of work that promote inspiration and experiences using a range of materials. It is our intent to inspire children to enjoy art and develop the enthusiasm to have a go and celebrate their successes. We encourage also that they are interested in unexpected results, and experiment further to refine and improve their skills. Our curriculum follows the National Curriculum for Art and Design at Key Stages 1 and 2.

How We Teach Art Design at Amblecote

Art is taught through:

· Lessons that are practical, exploratory, and skills based,

· Giving children opportunities to work with a variety of materials to experiment with and develop their skills,

· The use of sketchbooks in KS2 to develop ideas, practise techniques, and reflect on progress,

· Discussing, comparing and evaluating work

Children are encouraged to experiment, take creative risks, and express their ideas. We also provide enrichment opportunities such as whole-school art week, and artist workshops.

What We Teach in Art Design at Amblecote

Our curriculum enables children to:

· Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.

· Experiment using a variety of materials,

· Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture, printing and other art, craft, and design techniques.

· Evaluate and analyse their own and others’ creative works using the language of art and design.

· Learn about relevant artists, designers, and architects, and understand how art can reflect times, places, and people linked to history and culture.

We ensure progression in both skills and knowledge, allowing children to revisit and refine techniques as they move through the school

What Children Learn and How We Assess at Amblecote

Art Assessment at Amblecote

Assessment at Amblecote is ongoing throughout art lessons. Teachers will observe and work with children to see how they are handling materials, using techniques shown, experimenting, and listening to the language pupils use to tell other peers and staff about their ideas.

Through ongoing assessment pupils will be given the opportunity to reflect on their own work and that of other and encouraged to use artistic vocabulary to describe and evaluate.

Observation and discussions during lessons will also provide opportunities to assess pupils’ understanding of the cultural and historical significance of art.

It will also include informal reviews of KS2 sketchbooks and final pieces. In EYFS and KS1 observation and evaluating pupils’ ongoing artwork will provide assessment.

Introductions and plenaries where discussions about learning and evaluations will give opportunities for staff to assess pupils’ knowledge of art history (cultural, historical, movements, famous artists) and their use of language relating to art.

Termly art assessments folders will build an ongoing picture of pupils’ development in art throughout the school year after year.

Teachers will refer to the skills provision map to inform their judgement of pupils’ abilities, knowledge and understanding in art and design.
